This evening we will be beginning a new series titled "THE POVERTY OF JESUS". This series has been a burning desire in my heart for a long time. I sincerely believe that you will be blessed by this series.  By the end of this teaching, I believe that you will get to know what poverty actually means as pertaining to believers, what financial riches actually means as pertaining to believers and keys to stepping into the dimensions of a believers' financial riches. You can also read up the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, read it up to part 3 and I am sure you will be truly blessed by it. Are you ready for this ride? Follow me till the end of this series and be blessed.
Let's first look at our opening scripture
1 Cor 8:9
KJV:For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich (emphasis mine).
This scripture used to always get on my nerves, I will be like, "was Jesus poor?", why would apostle Paul say he was rich but he became poor for my sake. Like come on, I just couldn't accept that Jesus was poor but again this question stroke me, what is poverty?, so what is poverty according to the world's system? And what is poverty according to God's kingdom?, According to Wikipedia's definition, Poverty is the scarcity or the lack of a certain amount of material possessions or money. W.H.O  (World Health Organization) defines poverty as follows,
“Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time". Remember this is the world's system definition of poverty, So now let's look at God's kingdom definition of poverty by looking at how poor Jesus was. Persons have read this portion of scripture and always misconstrued what poverty means meanwhile the apostle was trying to show us a truth here. Truly the things of God cannot be understood by the carnal mind.
1. Jesus wore good clothes, I mean the clothes were so unique that the soldiers couldn't even dare to damage it when they were damaging others ( Matt 27:35, John 19:23-24). So it means as a believer according to the kingdom agenda your lowest level of poverty should permit good clothes not rags anything short of that is outside God's purpose for you.
2. He could pay tax comfortably. Come on now, are you believer and you find it difficult to pay taxes?, you are even avoiding them or you manipulate things so you won't have to pay taxes. Remember Jesus is our role model or rather the author and finisher of our faith. So it means He came to show us an example of how things are like in His kingdom. So if you are citizen of His kingdom and still on this earth, the lowest level of poverty should still allow you pay taxes comfortably.
3. He received invitations to parties, wedding ceremonies. That means, Jesus be still get level despite say e b poor. Remember the wedding at Cana?
4. He had the best rides. You recall the boat Jesus slept on when he was going away from Galilee to continue His work across town(Mark 4:35). The boat was comfortable enough for him to sleep well, soundly and deeply. What about the colt he rode on, into Jerusalem on palm Sunday, brand new, never been used by anyone before. Even the grave he was buried in, brand new one, never been used before.
So as a believer when you say you are poor, you are actually saying I have just enough to buy good clothes for my family and I, I have just enough money to put food on my table and that of my loved ones, I have just enough resources to keep my business afloat, I have just enough resources to send my kids to school, I have just enough resources to own and maintain a car, I have just enough resources to build one house. And sadly, there are alot of Christains who truly are in this realm and are happy or some probably embittered. Worse than that is that there are a greater number of believers who are living proofs or testimony of the world's definition of poverty. Jesus became this poor for us, so we will know how poor he doesn't want us to be, so we will know just how poor He has ensured we never be. Do you realize and believe this?, truly do you believe it?  See it pains me when I see believers who do not live out the full privileges of their status in Christ. Some majorly because of doubt, others because of ignorance. It is one thing to know these things and start putting them into practice and not yet be seeing results and it is another thing to not know them and be dying like mere men. I mean Jesus has freed us from the curse of poverty forever. I know also that God would sometimes allow us taste the depths of the world's system of poverty before bringing us into the riches of His kingdom. So that when we see others who have not yet been brought into the realm of kingdom riches we will be able to teach them without love and passion not sarcastically or look down on them as nonetities. But it should only last for a time. Not 20,30,40 years, no sir. It isn't supposed to last that long.
So how rich are we supposed to be as believers? I read a story one time of a man who was celebrating his eightieth birthday. He received an invitation from an unknown person to come to a hotel, that the birthday party was going to be sponsored by him(unknown person). So the eighty year old man was carried to the venue by his family members and the party was an interesting one but the elderly man was uncomfortable because he didn't know the crowd of persons he was seeing. So at the tail end of the party the host stood and introduced himself as one of the many persons the elderly man had sponsored his education. The man and the other 80 persons who were in the room all had their education sponsored by this man despite he had his own kids. So one man educated 80 persons who had no blood relation with him. As a believer you are supposed to be wealthy enough to help another family comfortably. In your street, there must be one family that is really poor, you should be rich enough to sponsor feeding and education for that family. That is kingdom riches. Let's stop here for today.
