This morning, we will be looking at scriptures to see if there are actually seven spirits of God. I have heard persons preach a lot of things and some so called mysteries out of the concept, "Seven spirits of God". I have always told people no matter how anointed a man of God is, learn how to take out time to search out whether what he or she preaches is in accordance with scriptures not whether it is correct logically. I have mentors who have taught along certain line that I have refused to believe. Why? Because I have searched scriptures and I didn't see those teachings tally. It doesn't make them false or fake please. They are still very anointed men of God. Probably my understanding hasn't yet gotten to their level. In Acts 17:10-12 ( read this passage personally), we see the bereans searching out scriptures to see whether what Apostle Paul taught was right. This was Apostle Paul, the great Apostle who could demystify mysteries. Yet, they were more careful to search and be sure of what they were going to believe in. They were following the admonitions of Apostle Peter who had said, we should do everything to make our calling and elections sure that we may stand thereby.
Anyways let's treat our topic for the day and find out what the seven spirits of God are or are not. Let's go back to the beginning.
Gen 1:26-27
26

KJV:And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27

KJV:So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God had said, "let us make man in our image and likeness". Now sense should tell us that it wasn't this flesh that God was talking about when He said that, even though the above scripture makes us feel that way. Now, let's look at
Gen 2:7

7

KJV:And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

This particular scripture gives us a hint of the image and likeness of God. But again it isn't clear enough. Now let's look at
Job 32:8

8

NIV:But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.

This clarifies what the image and likeness of God is. God made us in his nature, as a reflection of Him. He made us as spirit beings whom he gave thinking faculties(mind) like He does but placed us in a flesh so we could interact with the physical realm. So do you get what the image and likeness of God is Now? So we see that Job 32:8 explains clearly what the breath in Gen 2:7 is. So Gen 1:26-27 was the summary of the whole thing. News in brief. We should also note that God made our body in similitude of the earth. Our hair He made like grass that always grows when it is cut whether it is attended to or not, our bones He made like rocks which never decay, our skin from clay, our blood like water etc. Which tells you that the body God made for man couldn't have been the image and likeness of Him. He was talking about the Spirit. If that is clear, now, let's look at scriptures where seven spirits of God are mentioned.
Rev 1:4

4

KJV:John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

Rev 3:1

1

KJV:And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Rev 4:1-6

1

KJV:After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

2

KJV:And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

3

KJV:And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

4

KJV:And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

5

KJV:And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Rev 5:5-8

5

KJV:And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

6

KJV:And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

7

KJV:And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

8

KJV:And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints

Did you notice that the phrase "seven spirits of God" appears only four times in the whole Bible and only in the book of revelation? If you didn't know before, now, you do. Notice also that everytime, seven spirits of God was mentioned, there were always in relation to the throne and/or  the lamb. It was never independent. OK, Now let's analyse each of these passages. Looking at

Rev 1:4

4

KJV:John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

We see that Apostle John does not greet the province of Asia the way Apostle Paul and Peter normally did. Infact each of the different apostles had different ways of greeting. Just picking two of the numerous examples
Phil 1:2

2

KJV:Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Pet 1:2

2

KJV:Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

Do you see that it is the same greeting pattern but whereas Apostle Paul and Peter were been straightforward in their greetings, Apostle John wasn't, he was using symbols and titles of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Now, let's look at

Rev 3:1

1

KJV:And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

but before we go on, there is an important fact we have to locate in Rev 1:20
Rev 1:20

20

KJV:The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Now we see what the seven stars in chapter 3 means, we also know that the number seven is a number representing perfection. Please note that the book of revelation is a prophetic book and as such there is a lot of symbol usage. It would be very very wrong of us to take literal meaning to the things we are as supposed to treat as symbols. So we believe that the messages in Rev 2 down to chapter 3 wasn't only for the seven churches but the whole church. Rev 3:1 gives us a revelation about sound church government: it is Christ through the Holy Spirit working with a human representative (I.e General overseer or resident pastor). Not just a group of men. Looking at

Rev 4:1-6

5

KJV:And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God

Remember that in Rev 1:20, we had see the lampstands which represented the seven churches but what about the lamps. The Lampstands on their own won't give light. But here, in chapter 4, we see the lamps which points out to us, that the church without the presence,  power and partnership with the Holy Spirit won't give light to the world, won't be able to preach the gospel effectively, won't be able to fulfill the great commission. He tells us that the church needs the Holy Spirit to be complete, effective and efficient. If there were actually seven different spirits of God. It means that each of the churches would have seven different spirits. Just imagine how chaotic the body of Christ would be. It would also mean that God intentionally wanted the church to be lacking in the fullness of His Spirit and Power. Does that sound like God to you? Now let's look at

Rev 5:5-8

Here, we are told the lamb has seven horns and seven eyes. We know from other prophetic books especially Isaiah that the lamb represented the Messiah, Jesus Christ, so let's reference some gospel passages.
Luke 3:22

22

KJV:And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

John 1:33

33

KJV:And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

Mk1:10

10

KJV:And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him

Matt 3:16

16

KJV:And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

These passages tell us about the lamb that has one Spirit but Apostle John uses symbols to tell us that the lamb had the perfect Spirit of God in fullness. OK, now let's go to common sense. When we began this topic, we established that the image of God, man was made in, which was in His Spirit. So which means that if God has seven spirits, then each man also has seven spirits. We all know and believe that each man has one spirit, which means God has invariably become a liar and deceit because he didn't make us according to His image and likeness which represents His fullness and exactness but rather He made us in part. Now does that sound like God to you?
Now let's look at another scripture
Eph 4:1-6

1
KJV:I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2
KJV:With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3
KJV:Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4
KJV:There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
5
KJV:One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6
KJV:One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Note particularly verses 4-6. There is one body of Christ. Despite the many denominations we have today, there is still just one body of Christ. Her members cut across all denominations. The denominations together make up the one body of Christ. It is this one body of Christ that the one and only Spirit of God works in, with and through even though it is in diverse ways. So I have the same Spirit that pastor Benny hinn, Bishop David Oyedepo and pastor Kenneth Copeland has. We serve one Lord, we have one faith i.e we believe in the same person. We believe that Christ died for us by so doing, He released us from the law of sin and death, He had risen which means we were raised together with him, Holy, righteous, blameless and filled with the Spirit of God. So in summary, there is one body of Christ with all her members having the one and same Spirit, believing in the death, resurrection and finished work of Christ on the cross for us and all her members sharing in that one baptism.
Do you believe Now, that the seven spirits of God used four times in the book of Revelation was a symbolic representation of Him like the way dove, water, Fire etc were used to represent Him in other books of the Bible. Now let's look at
Isaiah 11:1-2.

1

KJV:And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

2

KJV:And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

This is where persons have ascribed names, seven different names to the seven spirits of God thereby making them seven different spirits. God isn't the author of confusion dearly beloved. You see, it is our desire to know mysteries, to have head knowledge, to have enough rhema that has put us in errors. I dare to say that there is no single mystery mentioned in scripture that hasn't been demystified for our sakes, if not, each of us would come up with our different interpretations leading to chaos. Instead of looking for the interpretations of these mysteries from scriptures and sticking with it. We want to conjure up our own teachings and we hear a lot of funny weird teachings circulating. Well, let's return to Isaiah 11:1-2, this portion tells us about Christ. Verse 1 tells us the state, the Davidic lineage would be in when Christ would come. You know stump is the bottom of a tree that hasn't been cut off which means Isaiah was prophesying and telling the Israelites that the time the Messiah would come, the lineage of David won't have as much respect, honour and dignity it did. Remember duringn the time of Isaiah, the kings of Judah were from David's lineage, so if you were part of that lineage, you were royalty and as such you were accorded some level of respect and honour. And true to that prophecy when the Messiah came, the Romans were incharge so no one really cared about the lineage Of David even though they still honoured and respected Him. Now let's proceed to verse 2. For the purpose of clarity, I would be using different Bible translations.
Isaiah 11:2

2

KJV:And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
ESV:And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
NIV:The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
AMP:And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord—

Now, do you notice how some translations highlighted the listing. After the spirit of the Lord, there was either a semi-colon or a hypen for some translation which tells us that the seven do not go together. That passage was saying the Spirit of the Lord would rest on him and as such He would have wisdom, knowledge etc. Secondly, if it were seven names of seven different spirits, then the writer of Isaiah would have listed them out as such and not pair them. The Holy Spirit wont have allowed such a mistake to occur. The Bible is too accurate to make mistakes, just too accurate and detailed to do such. Now, recall that under the old covenant, whenever it was said that a man had the Spirit of God, we see one or two these dimensions operating in him or her. Abraham had the fear of God and might, Joseph had the fear of God, wisdom and understanding, Samson had might etc. The list goes on and on. So it was more like Isaiah the prophet was saying that the Messiah who would come, was going to come at a low time in the Davidic lineage, He was going to be filled with the Spirit of God and as such was going to have divine wisdom and understanding etc. Meaning, He wasn't going to be lacking in any operational dimension of the Holy Spirit. Which He also ensured was possible too for everyone under the new covenant. Glory. I don't know about you, I know I have the one and only perfect Holy Spirit and as a result I am loaded with divine wisdom and understanding, divine counsel and might, divine knowledge and fear Of God. No dimensions or operations of the Spirit are foreign to me. I flow easily and effortlessly in them all. I am complete and I have nothing lacking. Is that your confession too??
